How to Improve at Having Conversations
I recently came across a viral post in the Social Skills Reddit Community that caught my attention. The poster expressed amazement at how naturally articulate some people are during conversations and when answering questions.
Throughout my life, I've made the same observation — certain people seem to have a natural gift for conversation. They effortlessly ask engaging questions, deepen discussions, and navigate awkward pauses with ease. For many of us, this ability can seem almost genetic; if you don't naturally have it, you might believe you never will.
The Practice Paradox We All Face
Like any skill, conversation abilities can be improved with practice. Take Timothée Chalamet, for example, as the poster mentioned. His articulate nature comes from thousands of interviews and countless conversations with friends, family, directors, colleagues, fans, and reporters. He's had extensive practice, which explains his natural eloquence.
This creates an interesting paradox: if you don't have many conversations, you won't excel at them, which can make initiating new conversations feel intimidating! How can we possibly win??
Other Methods of Improvement
An alternative best pratice is replaying conversations in your head, which I often do as a negative reflection in retrospect of what I should've said to not sound stupid or to sound funnier, which I'm sure all of us do. Those reflections do add up and give some incremental progress, but of course it is not as good as the real thing.
Another alternative is just listening to a lot of conversations between friends in person or on TV (assuming the script isn't too corny). If you hear people speak in similar environments to the one you're usually in, you'll pick up on the buzzwords and best practices of how to have a good conversation and what to typically say.
